The $80 million study began in 1991, when researchers recruited 1,300 newborns from hospitals in 10 U.S. cities. The investigators monitored the subjects from birth to kindergarten. They observed the subjects in childcare, and surveyed teachers and parents using personality tests and checklists.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half of American mothers with children under the age of one work outside of the home today, forcing them to turn to outside childcare.
