We cannot escape the aging process, no matter how hard we try. As we grow older, many of us gain some extra weight, get tired more easily, and have aches and pains we never had before. We can fight the signs of aging with exercising and better eating habits. Looking older and losing hair are the worst parts about getting older. Men are more likely to suffer from hair loss, which deeply affects a person’s self esteem. There are both over the counter and prescription products that claim to reverse hair loss. Finasteride is a prescription that has been proven to offer results.

As stated in Wikipedia, Finasteride is a synthetic antiandrogen (hinders the biological reflexes usually triggered by the male sex hormones). Originally, Finasteride (marketed as Proscar, Fincar and Finara) was intended to be taken by men with benign prostate hyperplasia, as 5 mg of this medication decreased urinary symptoms. Finasteride has shown to help treat hair loss in men. Propecia might reverse male pattern baldness when a 1 mg dose is taken.

The enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which is a hormone that causes shrinkage of hair follicles (Wellness Letter, University CA Berkely), is inhibited when an individual takes 1 mg of finasteride orally. Testing has shown that finasteride encourages conversion of hair into a growing phase, stops the shrinking of hair follicles and decreases the spread of hair loss. Propecia works best for men who are starting to lose hair, and are not all the way bald. It is more effective on reversing hair loss around the crown than on a receding hairline. You will have to wait awhile to see a significant difference, usually six months; and it will take about two years for most of your hair restoration to happen. This drug will need to be taken indefinitely if you wish to keep your hair. This drug should only be used if you suffer from male pattern hair loss.

You should know that there are a few cases of the product causing erectile dysfunction and decreased sex drive. Younger men should also take into consideration the fact that Propecia will affect their hormones the entire time that they take it, and the effects of long term use are currently unknown.

Warning: It is important to know that women should not use Propecia to reverse hair loss. In fact, this medicine can cause major birth defects in male fetuses. Pregnant women, those who may potentially become pregnant, should avoid touching a broken or smashed tablet.
