World’s Overweight Population Growing

In the U.S., 55 percent of Americans are overweight. Along with other countries, the overweight population has grown to 1.1 billion people worldwide. Historically, the world’s population has been predominately underweight, especially in developing countries, but today there has been considerable reductions in world hunger. However, due to the recent sharp increase in the overweight population, there are as many overweight as underweight people.

Poor nutrition is the cause for both, leading to increased risk of death, illnesses, injuries and other health problems. Many countries have merely replaced diseases associated with hunger for diseases linked to being overweight.

Countries like Cuba and Kerala state in India are focusing on nutrition programs to reduce the underweight population, while Singapore has implemented a program to reduce obesity in children.

In many countries, the wealthy get fatter and the poor go hungry, while in the U.S., the poor get fatter and the rich eat healthy. For many Americans, it is more economical to eat fast food than more healthy substitutes.
